Creating Surge with SurgeTK

Creating a Surge, configuring Value Adds, validating households, and preparing advisor packets—step by step inside SurgeTK.

Updated over 3 months ago

Before You Start

  • Have your data imported (households, accounts, beneficiaries, insurance, liabilities, etc.) so Value Adds can validate correctly.

  • Decide your meeting cadence (from the Surge articles) so you know which households you’ll include and which Value Adds you want to send.

1) Create Your Surge

  1. Go to Surge in the left navigation.

  2. Click New Surge.

  3. Name your Surge (e.g., 2025 Q4 — Fall Reviews) so packets and downloads are easy to identify later.

  4. Set a Start Date and End Date (these anchor scheduling and prep windows).

  5. Click Create.

Tip: Clear naming + dates help your team find packets fast and keep your cadence tight.

2) Configure What Goes Into Each Packet

On the Surge Details page you’ll configure the packet contents that will be generated per household.

A. Add or Remove Value Adds

  • In the Surge details page, click "Choose Value adds" to enable/disable the Value Adds you want for this Surge (e.g., Net Worth, Guardrails, Beneficiaries).

  • Reorder Value Adds to set the packet flow (simply drag and drop to reorder).

B. Upload Custom Documents (Optional)

  • Click "Add File (PDF)" to include any custom PDFs (e.g., agenda, disclosures, checklists) that should appear in every advisor packet for this Surge.

  • Remove or re‑order as needed.

Tip: Pair one focused Value Add with your agenda to keep meetings ≤ 60 minutes and maximize clarity.

3) Validate Households (Fix Warnings & Errors)

The Households table on the Surge Details page shows a row for each household along with any Warnings or Errors.

  • Warnings might include things like missing beneficiary data or unallocated buckets.

  • Errors indicate something critical that would prevent a clean packet.

Action: Hover over warning icon to identify the issue, click into a household to correct the data.

Important: Resolve warnings/errors before bulk generation to avoid rework and client confusion.

4) Choose Which Households to Prepare

You can prepare individually or in bulk:

  • Prepare one household first (recommended) to confirm layout, branding, and data look correct in your download.

  • Then multi‑select households (use checkboxes or a “Select All” option, if available) for bulk preparation.

Best practice: Always do a single‑household test run before preparing at scale.

5) Prepare Advisor Packets

With your households selected, click Prepare.

  • A progress indicator will appear showing preparation status.

  • Preparation time: roughly 1–2 minutes per household packet, depending on internet speed.

  • Do not refresh your browser while preparation is running.

When complete:

  • Households with a finished packet will show a Prepared indicator.

  • Any issues will be flagged so you can fix and re‑prepare just those households.

6) Download Packets

Packets will download automatically after Surge preparation is complete. You have two convenient ways to re-download:

  1. From the Surge Details page

    • Locate the household row → click on the PDF icon.

    • The packet downloads to your local computer.

  2. From the individual Household

    • Open the Household Details page → click on the PDF icon located inside the Surge table.

7) Adjusting Contents Mid‑Surge

  • You can toggle Value Adds on/off or reorder them at any time for future packet generations.

  • To update a packet that’s already been generated, make your changes and re‑prepare for that household.

Process guardrail: Avoid constant tweaks during Surge days—batch changes between packet runs to protect your schedule.

8) Troubleshooting & Tips

  • Warnings/Errors in the table: Hover over the badge to see what’s missing (e.g., beneficiaries, allocations, no accounts). Update data, then re‑prepare.

  • Slow preparation: Large uploads, very large households, or slow internet can increase prep time. Let the progress indicator finish; avoid refreshing the page.

  • Wrong order/extra pages: Reorder Value Adds or remove custom docs in Packet Contents, then re‑prepare.

  • Branding off: Check Firm Branding settings (logo/color) so exported PDFs match your firm’s look.
